ACTIVITY – RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Over the past two decades client expectations have changed greatly. They included some suppliers into their product development processes in order to make inroads on planning efficiency and development time. In response to market demand in 2001 Fémalk established our own development department which presently employs 13 engineers.

The product development responsibility transferred to us demands that our engineers become familiar with the real product and its final properties such as deviation, rigidity, producibility, testing features... It is no longer sufficient to be familiar with simulations in virtual space!

Our task is to design and develop a product that can be easily and efficiently manufactured in proper quality. It must fit the installation space given by the client and satisfy a list of requirements regarding rigidity, dynamic behaviour, purity targets etc. If the client so desires, we also assume the tasks of testing the prototypes and serial products.

e are proud that long-standing clients contact us regularly to ask our advice and opinion about their current problems.

Taking into consideration the prescribed installation space, we prepare the product's model with a 3D design software (Catia V5, Pro/E, Creo, NX). We optimise the raw model by way of several turns of rigidity calculations (using Ansys WB, Catia GPS). Based on final geometry the technology department assisted by tool designers will prepare the casting channel to be examined with the help of a filling simulation. It is at this point a number of potential faults (like porosity, blowholes and air pockets) can be prevented effectively by the necessary adjustments.

At this stage of product development prototypes can be created by sand or die casting. These pieces must then be tested for functionality and – as required – for rigidity and accelerated life cycle.
